While the world is grappling with the harsh reality of the pandemic and with everyone confined within the four walls of their homes, technology has proved itself to be a blessing. Communicating with loved ones who are distant has become easy, working has become easier and you have limitless access to entertainment, all thanks to technology. It’s a real blessing, but it does have a dark side. We chat more than we talk, our virtual presence is higher than our actual presence, we think more about what our followers think than what our loved ones think, we work round the clock but we are not working towards our health and well-being. So, has technology created a predicament here?
With all of us surrounded by technology 24x7, we are now falling prey to a phenomenon known as ‘technostress.’ A 2017 study conducted by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden proposed that cell phone, computer, and television use are directly linked to stress levels, quality of sleep, and even overall mental health. Due to the pandemic and lockdown, we are now glued to our phones, laptops, and TVs for more hours than usual. This can give rise to hostility towards technology. And by reading this if you are getting a feeling of discomfort, and cringing while reading the word technology again and again then you are not alone!
The good news is though, that we will now tell you how to tackle technostress effectively and you will love these steps!
1. Reduce the number of communication platforms - The pandemic has brought our entire world online. So it’s not uncommon to find yourself interacting with a colleague or friend over a variety of platforms at the same time. This makes you overburdened by notifications from all platforms, whether it’s Facebook, Slack, WhatsApp, Email, or Instagram. Higher the number of platforms, the higher your need to be connected to a device. With the lines between work and home blurring, you might find yourself checking emails and responding to messages after normal work hours. This learned habit exposes you to gadgets and adds stress during times that should be dedicated to relaxation. So, turn off your notifications after a certain time and don’t feel guilty for doing so, realize that setting boundaries at work doesn’t make you lazy or irresponsible.
2. Practice mindfulness:Mindfulness. Such a simple term, yet so misunderstood. To keep it simple, mindfulness is the act of focusing your attention on what you are doing at that moment. By focus, we mean thinking about the movement of your body as you breathe, the objects around you, and even the sounds you can hear from the road outside. The objective of this exercise is to bring us back to reality. In this fast-paced world we inhabit, more often than not, we are constantly bombarded with various bits of information or chores that need our immediate attention. All of these cause stress and anxiety. By incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine, it helps you to be fully present and aware of what you are doing. This ensures that you are better able to handle being overwhelmed or anxious. There are multiple techniques including breathing-focused meditation that help you develop mindfulness. 3. Try walking meditation: The best and the most effective way to disconnect from technostress is by reconnecting with mother Earth.
